Summary
Gains keeps your information on your iPhone and, if you turn on iCloud, in your own private iCloud account. The developer runs no servers, shows no ads, does not track you, and never sells or shares your data.
This policy covers the Gains app for iPhone and Apple Watch, its widgets and its Siri shortcuts. "We" means the developer of Gains, Hank Reynoso. Questions go to hankrey@icloud.com.
What Gains stores and where
Gains stores only what you enter or allow it to read, so it can work out your Allowance:
| Information | Examples | Where it's kept |
|---|---|---|
| Workouts | Start time, minutes, Intensity Tier | Your iPhone; your private iCloud if sync is on |
| Spending | Amount, date, the note you type | Your iPhone; your private iCloud if sync is on |
| Settings and choices | Quota, Base Wage, Review decisions, appearance | Your iPhone; your private iCloud if sync is on |
| Worked-out figures | Balance, Wage, Streak, Badges, insights | Worked out on your iPhone each time; not sent anywhere |
Your private iCloud database belongs to your Apple Account. Apple stores it under Apple's Privacy Policy, and the developer cannot see it. If iCloud is off, everything stays on your iPhone.
Apple Health
With Gains Plus, you can let Gains read your workouts from Apple Health so they log themselves. It's off until you turn it on, and you can turn it off in Gains or in the Health settings at any time.
- What's read: each workout's type, start time and length, used to work out its Intensity Tier and Effort Points. Nothing else from Apple Health is read.
- What happens to it: the workout becomes a Workout in Gains, stored as described above.
- What never happens: Apple Health data is never used for advertising or marketing, never shared with or sold to anyone, and never used for anything except showing and counting your Workouts in Gains.
Friends and Nudges
Friends is optional. If you use it, Gains publishes a small profile to Apple's iCloud (the app's public CloudKit database) so your Friends' iPhones can read it. You never create an account; it uses the iCloud account already on your iPhone.
- Your profile holds only: the name you choose for Friends, your current Streak, your Badges and when you earned them, and, unless you turn it off, this week's progress as a percentage of your Quota.
- Never shared: your Balance, Wage, Spending, Debt, Quota, Base Wage, Effort Points or Workouts.
- Friend requests and Nudges: sending one stores your Friend code, theirs, your chosen name and, for a Nudge, the message and the time it was sent.
- Who can see it: your profile is found by your Friend code, which you share by sending an invite. Gains shows your profile only to people you've both accepted as Friends. Anyone you give your Friend code to could technically look up the name, Streak, Badges and progress in it.
- Stopping: removing a Friend stops you seeing each other in Gains. Turning off "Share this week's progress" removes the percentage from your profile.
Purchases, Apple Watch, Siri and notifications
- Gains Plus purchases are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never see your name, email or payment details; Apple gives developers only anonymous sales totals.
- Apple Watch: your iPhone sends the Watch your Balance, Streak and progress, and the Watch sends back any Spending you log on it. This happens directly between your own devices.
- Siri, Shortcuts and widgets use the same information as the app, on your iPhone. Siri requests are handled by Apple under its own privacy policy.
- Notifications: the weekly recap and Streak reminders are scheduled on your iPhone. A Nudge from a Friend is delivered by Apple's notification service.
- Effort Percentile and spending insights (Gains Plus) are worked out on your iPhone. The Effort Percentile compares your week with a population table that ships inside the app (CDC NHANES 2021โ2023); nothing about you is sent to work it out.
What Gains never does
- No ads, and no advertising or analytics companies' code in the app.
- No tracking across other apps or websites.
- No selling, renting or sharing your information with anyone.
- No servers of our own: the only places your information goes are your devices, your private iCloud, and (for Friends) the public CloudKit database described above.
If you choose to share crash reports with developers in your iPhone's settings, Apple may pass anonymous crash reports to us. We use them only to fix bugs.
Deleting your data
- On your iPhone: deleting Gains deletes everything it stored on the device.
- In iCloud: open the Settings app, tap your name, then iCloud โ Manage Account Storage โ Gains, and delete its data.
- Friends profile: remove your Friends in Gains, then email hankrey@icloud.com from any address and include your Friend code (shown on the Badges tab). We'll delete your profile, requests and Nudges within 30 days.
Children
Gains is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. Big changes will also be mentioned in the app's release notes.
